United States. Which answers that. Cally But I thought her father was a senator from virginia?   was she sent to London to go to boarding school or something? Maybe her dad was a diplomat before he became a Senator and was stationed in Britain. Could be several reasons. -TemPeck

S P O I L E R S P A C E Russian: How does a British woman become an American spy? Lauren: I'm not a spy. And though I grew up in London, I was born in the United States. Which answers that. It answers that, and since it's on screen I guess you have to accept it. However, it's a very poor answer with a capital POOR. Why not just say that she grew up in Australia but born in the US? At the end of the day one thing is certain and that is her accent is NOT British, and that includes all the countries that make up Britain. Everyone I know in the UK who as seen her in Alias as clearly identified her accent as Australian, and certainly not British. With her accent I can not find her in any way even close to being believable as a British character. If Amercians and the shows producers really think that her accent is British then they really do need their hears checked. I'm sorry but that's the way it it. I still stand by my reasoning which as also been back up by a Canadian business colleague that the reasons why Americans and Canadians can't tell the difference between the British and Australian accents is because of the lack of exposure that the Australian accent as in America and Canada. If she grew up in London then she should have a British accent. the simple fact is that she doesn't. All in all, it's a very sloppy production, and the only time that I can recall where I have been disappointed in Alias and it's producers. Regards, ZC

He's a senator now, doesn't mean he was when Lauren was younger (unless I missed a time_frame_ reference). There are any number of reasons the family could have been living in the UK back then but the show hasn't seen fit to enlighten us yet. Yes, and I'm still waiting for them to enlighten us on how she as an Australian accent if she grew up in London? I was born and grew up in London. The accent she uses is not a British one.

Even better, they can say she grew up in the U.S. but her mother was British, or Australian if you wanna nit-pick.

Interesting, because one of our British posters said a few weeks ago that Lauren's accent doesn't sound remotely British, but Australian. (I personally think she sounds British, but I would trust a British person's opinion more on that one). I guess Melissa George is an Australian playing someone with a British accent. That was most likely me. I'm a Londoner and although I'm repeating myself here, Lauren's accent is no where even close to being British, and every British person I know who watches confirms that it is clearly 100 percent  Australian. As I said previously even a Canadian business contact of mine confrimed that Americans and Canadians in general have a very hard time in telling the difference between the two accents when I asked her about them. Since Melissa George is an Australian actress supposedly playing a British character she as obviously and sadly been very poorly miscast since she is certainly not believable. I personally have enjoyed Melissa George in other shows that I have seen her in over the years but in the case of Alias, it's very poor casting in hindsight. If they wanted Lauren to br British then why not just hire a British actress with a real British accent? At least that would have been believable.

Perhaps because they need to boost the ratings, and Melissa's been known to take off her clothes before. <sarcasm Besides, it's an American show, and Americans are too dumb to tell the difference between British and Australian accents anyways.  They were even too dumb to understand a reference to the philosopher's stone. </sarcasm
