If they wanted Lauren to br British then why not just hire a British actress with a real British accent? At least that would have been believable. Perhaps because they need to boost the ratings, and Melissa's been known to take off her clothes before. <sarcasm Besides, it's an American show, and Americans are too dumb to tell the difference between British and Australian accents anyways.  They were even too dumb to understand a reference to the philosopher's stone. </sarcasm All sarcasm aside I do feel that the quality of Alias as been seriously let down. If Americans and Canadians are unable to tell the difference between the two accents then that is their fault. But what I and many of my friends find a bit insulting is that we are expected to believe that Lauren has a British accent when she clearly doesn't. If they did have to hire a non British actress then they could have worked harder to find someone that could do a convincing British accent. Unfortunately Melissa George can't do a British accent to save her life. Maybe she really was hired because she is willing to take her clothes off. As for the philosopher's stone , I still find it crazy that they had to rename that because they thought the Americans wouldn't understand it. That in my book is pure dumbing down and just as crazy as those people who started or signed petitions trying to order that the film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers have it's name changed because it was clearly meant to refer to the Twin Towers/9-11 even though the book was written decades earlier.

I know the actress is Australian.  They should have said she grew up in Australia because even though it seems she trying to get rid of the accent for tv it's still pretty strong. Maria

Interesting, because one of our British posters said a few weeks ago that Lauren's accent doesn't sound remotely British, but Australian. (I personally think she sounds British, but I would trust a British person's opinion more on that one). I guess Melissa George is an Australian playing someone with a British accent. That was most likely me. I'm a Londoner and although I'm repeating myself here, Lauren's accent is no where even close to being British, and every British person I know who watches confirms that it is clearly 100 percent  Australian. As I said previously even a Canadian business contact of mine confrimed that Americans and Canadians in general have a very hard time in telling the difference between the two accents when I asked her about them. I think that's more true for Americans than Canadians.    Canada has more exposure to British culture than the Americans do so I think it's easier for us to understand and differentiate between accents.   Canada predominantly uses British English and not American English, etc. I'm Canadian and could tell right away she was trying to hide a very strong Australian accent. Thanks Maria, I'm glad someone is able to tell difference and know that it is a Australian accent and not a British accent.

That in my book is pure dumbing down and just as crazy as those people who started or signed petitions trying to order that the film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers have it's name changed because it was clearly meant to refer to the Twin Towers/9-11 even though the book was written decades earlier. Oh yeah....now that you mention it, I remember hearing about that a while back.  I think I dismissed it immediately as a moronic idea, and decided to have faith that Peter Jackson cared enough about his work that he wouldn't allow for that kind of gutting. On the other hand, the high school for the town I live in recently tried to produce West Side Story, and got all sorts of flak from members of the community, who insisted it was inappropriate for the negative way in which it portrayed Latinos. There is no limit to human stupidity.
