Any roadgeek or other interested party who can get to Central Jersey, Wednesday Morning, June 4 is welcomed to observe the Re-dedication ceremony of the Blue Star Highway sign at the Cushetunk Rest Area on US 22 in WhiteHouse, NJ. It begins at 10:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Hunterdon (NJ) County Cultural & Heritage Commission, the Blue Star Memorial Highway Council and the Garden Clubs of New Jersey. Local, county, state and national officials will participate in the cermony along with representatives of the Hunterdon County Road Department, NJ/DOT, and veterans' groups. The rest area is about milemarker 25 on US 22 (about 11 miles west of the US 22, I-287 intersection).  It's actually a triangle of land where US 22 and Old Highway 28 (de-commissioned US 22) fork on the westbound lanes. The sign in question is the original Blue Star Memorial sign installed nearby in 1946 when the highway was first declared he Blue Star Drive. The sign was removed when US 22 was dualized in that area in 1958 and was placed in storage in the County Road Department garage and forgotten.  Nearly two years ago the County Road Department head uncovered the sign. The date of 1946 on the sign led him to contact the County Cultural & Heritage Commission (in New Jersey that's the county historians) who set in motion efforts to have the sign re-dedicated near its original location. Hope to see you there. Regards, Frank

the sign re-dedicated near its original location. I wonder if the Blue Star Highway sign is still up in Phillipsburg?  For anyone interested, if you're headed westbound on US 22, take the last exit in NJ, for South Main St. The sign is/was located in the median of old US 22 at the bottom of the hill, very near the crossover at the bottom of Fairmount St.  I think the sign has been long forgotten by all parties, so hopefully is still up. Melody, who didn't know anyone who could tell her what a Blue Star Highway was until very recently

Blue Star Mothers of America <http://www.bluestarmothers.org/ was responsible for having these dedicated. The Blue Star Mothers are an organization of women who have or had their son (or daughter, now) in active service. The mother traditionally put a banner in the window in honor of the child who was on active duty. It was white with red border and a blue star for each child on active duty.

I wonder if the Blue Star Highway sign is still up in Phillipsburg?   With the coming of the Interstates, there is now a sign on I-78 in that area. It's in the rest stop on the EB lanes between Exits 4 and 6.  Technically, I-78 is now part of the Blue Star Memorial Highway, not US 22. The sign is going back on 22, not I-78, for historic reasons. I just found that the details of the Re-dedication are posted on the Hunterdon County website. It has everything about the Blue Star Memorials and a photo of the sign. www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/ then click on Blue Star Re-dedication. Regards, Frank
