When I need more precision, I subdivide as East Asian/Southeast Asian/ South Asian . In British English, Asian usually means Indian sub-continent people, Oriental is used for Chinese/Japanese. I think South-East Asian is usually used for all the rest. This is why Americans who read alt.food.asian get confused when Brits come asking about Indian subcontinent cooking. Most Americans don't really think of India as part of Asia, and are barely aware of the existence of Pakistan and Bangladesh. I thought subcontinent was a medical condition somewhere between continent and incontinent. Uncle Bart?

dixit: Hey, Jim? I just checked the kanji just to see what else would turn up, and I found kurombo . Am I mistaken in thinking that this should be marked as derogatory? As in 黒ん坊 | 黒奴 ? Yes, I think it should be. I'll mark it. Thanks. I had this flash of a nightmare image

I've known one lily-white college student who insisted he was an American Indian. This guy was a nutcase. I think they buried his brain at Wounded Knee. Only one?! Wannabe Indians are the bane of the American Indian pow wow and spirituality circuits, or so I'm told. People who are 1/32 Cherokee and introduce themselves as American Indian amuse the hell out of me, but if I were American Indian myself, they'd probably piss me off something fierce.
