french names and meaning French Names - A surprise coming?

I know part of this has been covered (the French name stuff), but I was just wondering ... since most of the baddies in the books have names from French origin(Voldemort, Lestrange, Malfoy and even Crab and Goyle) and since there's only one good guy with a French name: Lupin ... wouldn't it make sense that he switches sides or maybe even has been doing business with Voldemort for some time? Peter Well, England and France have a history of going to war against each other. Maybe the whole dark wizard movement goes back to those centuries when the French were the bad guys fron an English point of view? Though Slytherin doesn't sound French to me, or has this name French roots, too? However Grindelwald, defeated by Dumbledore in 1945, was probably a German wizard associated with SS occultism (SS being the nazi organisation Schutzstaffel , not the 1st Potter book). Karkaroff, guessing by the sound of his name, might be Russian. Does that mean we'll be introduced to Arabic and Chinese villains next? Seriously though, I think it's too far fetched to accuse JKR of having xenophobic tendencies. Which I understand you were not doing. As for Lupin I'd more expect him to take Sirius's place to some extend, him being the last of James' close friends. Maybe he'll give Harry some extra DADA lessons. He taught him some usefull stuff before and as an Order member he should be informed of the prophecy's content.

You sound like my French teacher who tried to tell me television was a French word. Lupin's name is pure Latin, and only ignorance would suggest otherwise. It comes from Lupus which is the Latin for wolf and his first name is a direct throwback to the legend of the foundation of Rome by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus who after been thrown in the river shortly after birth where found and raised for a while by a she-wolf. If you where paying any attention to the books you would have realized this. JAB.

hmmm ... your remarks would suggest that I don't know what Lupin means ... I do know actually ... I happen to know both French and Latin ... and I did read the books ... in 2 different languages ... (English and Dutch) It's just I thought it was funny that Lupin is the only good guy with a French (i.e. Latin) name ... no more ... no less ... If you react to every posting as you did to this one, you have too much time on your hands ... or maybe you're just in a bad mood? Peter
