I took Spot to the vet in Albertville today, thank goodness he made the trip ok. I am so disappointed with this guy that I can hardly stand it, and I thought my regular vet was a pain. Phil, you are right. All they want to do is xrays. I explained the whole situation to him and left Spot for the day. When I returned, he called me in and showed me 3 xrays! Like I could read them! I told him earlier that I was not interested in xrays. He said that it would help him to know what was going on, but then admitted that he couldn't tell very much because the xrays were cloudy due to fluid in the lungs. He thinks the murmur is on the left side of the heart, he learned that from listening. He ruled out FIV (Spot has always had vaccines for this and he knew it.). He ruled out anemia. So.........I came away with that knowledge, a bottle of antibiotics , it reads Baytril 20 antibiotic(just in case. I asked, Just in case, What? He said, Just in case he has an infection in his heart. ),a bottle Aminophylline100mg, a bottle of Enacard 5mg vasodilator, and another bottle of Furosemide 12.5 ml (he has been taking this already for a week), and a receipt for the bill that I paid of $140. Made me an appointment at 9:00 in the morning with a vet up the road 5 miles from his office for Spot to have an EKG. I am such an idiot, I know I shouldn't have even paid the bill! So, I am back to where I started. I think I am going back to my regular vet and demand that he refer Spot to someone capable of doing these tests that he needs. I guess that the kitty was just tired from all that stuff, but the return trip was really rough on him and panted hard and was very stressed. He has settled down since we got home, had a big drink of chicken stock and a little food. Jean

Jean, I'm soooo disappointed to read this post! I was just in alt.binaries and happened upon Spot's photo! He's adorable! I showed my husband and he did the ahhhhhhh thing too. Now I've popped into H&B and see that he's sick! Please, please tell us what this new vet says. And Spot has got a spot on my prayer list until he's better. Huge Headbutts and purrs for the little guy. Bugsy jean wrote in message ... I took Spot to the vet in Albertville today, thank goodness he made the trip ok. Hi Jean, Sorry that you had such a bad time with that awful vet. I can't believe how he didn't even listen to you and did the xrays anyway. What is wrong with people? Doesn't he even care? I hope the pills will help Spot in the meantime until you find out exactly what is wrong. Tomorrow will probably be a more definitive day for you. Once you find out what is wrong, they will hopefully give you the correct medication. Good luck to you and to Spot. I'm praying for him. Jean, Call your bank and stop payment on the check. You didn't ask for x-rays...and they weren't even good ones... This is why I said go for ultrasounds right from the start. First its x-rays, then its ECG and then finally, ultrasounds, when ultrasounds would have told the whole story in one shot right from the beginning. The vet knows this. You have no idea how pissed I am right now! This is not the first time I've heard of this happening. This is precisely what I mean when I say credentials don't always mean competency - one can exist without the other. *Sometimes* a dorsal ventral x-ray may reveal a valentine-appearing heart because of biatrial enlargement and a left ventricle that comes to a point, but that's only if the operator is good and well trained in Radiography. Still, Radiographs are not sensitive enough to differentiate the different forms of cardiomyopathy, and x-rays may be normal in asymptomatic cats. The vet knows this, also. ...now he wants to do an Electrocardiogram?? ECG is the procedure of choice for documenting arrhythmias and conduction disturbances but can not differentiate different forms of cardiomyopathy or distinguish cardiomyopathy from hyperthyroidism. Cats with HCM may have a normal ECG. Don't waste your time or money on an electrocardiogram. Spot needs ultrasounds. Let me know which cities are close to you, and I'll try to find a veterinary hospital nearby that can do Echocardiography. you said Auburn University is a three hour trip, I think that may be too much stress for Spot. I'll try to find one closer. Hang in there. Phil.

Hi Jean, Here are a few vets in Huntsville. Call any one of them and ask if they perform Echocardiography (Ultrasounds), or if they know of a veterinary hospital in your vicinity that does. If Huntsville is too far, let me know which city is closer to you. I hope this helps. Please find one soon. Good luck, and keep us posted. Phil.
