Hello I will be travelling to South Africa with my new wife in November and we would like to do a game drive for a day or 2. We dont want to take Malaria tablets so we cant go to Kruger and will be spending most of our time around Cape Town and the Garden Route. Does anyone have any experience of the Garden Route Game Lodge? on their web site they claim to have the big 5! We have looked at Shamwari but cannot afford it. does anyone have any good ideas for viewing game in a natural environment that is Malaria free? thanks David

I have no experience on the lodge you talk about, but there are a few parks and things on the Garden rout. Some of them are: - The Tsitsikamma coastal and forest national park: South Africa's only marine Park, together with its inland cousin. You can also try the indigenous forests around Knysna, there are supposed to be elephants in there, altohugh one hardly sees them. Talking of Elephants... - The Addo Elephant Park: This park is quite close to Port Elizabeth (on the edge of the Garden route), and has quite a lof of animals. Started mainly because of its elephants, of course! - The bergkwagga (mountain zebra is the closest translation) national park: This is near Cradock in the Karoo. A bit inland maybe, but worthy a visit nonetheless. It has a lot of Zebra, lots of types of buck and some of the smaller predators. No big 5, though... Hope this helps you with your planning! Ciao! Samuel

Does anyone have any experience of the Garden Route Game Lodge? on their web site they claim to have the big 5! We have looked at Shamwari but cannot afford it. does anyone have any good ideas for viewing game in a natural environment that is Malaria free? thanks David Hi David. I've only just recently heard about the Garden Route Game Lodge as well so I can't vouch for it. It's in the Albertinia area as you approach the Garden Route from the direction of Cape Town so perhaps it's worth taking a look while you're in the area. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/albertinia.asp for a bit more about Albertinia. To add to what Samuel Kock said in his reply, the Tsitsikamma National Park is worth a visit while you're in the Garden Route. Tree-top canopy tours, abseiling and river tubing, walks and hiking trails such as the Otter Trail are also in Tsitsikamma NP. Also in the Tsitsikamma area is the world's highest bungee jump at Bloukrans bridge. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/sanparks-tsitsikamma.asp for more about Tsitsikamma. At Knysna you'll also find a host of things to do and see such as the Featherbed nature reserve, Millwood ruins and many walks and trails in the surrounding forests. And lots of oysters too. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/knysna.asp for more about Knysna. Plettenberg Bay is another tourist favourite in the Garden Route, there's an elephant park somewhere in the Plett area as well as Buffalo Hills Game Farm and Rhino _base_ Camp. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/plett.asp for more about Plett as we call it. Plett is about 230 Kms from Port Elizabeth mentioned by Samuel. The Friendly City is a nice place to go to, I used to live there years ago and sometimes still wonder why I left! If you like sailing, surfing, windsurfing, swimming, diving etc. then PE should be on your itinerary. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/portelizabeth.asp for more about PE as we call it. Addo Elephant National Park mentioned by Samuel is about 73 Kms from PE. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/addo.asp for more about Addo. A few nights ago on the news it was mentioned that a few lions have been re-introduced at Addo. At the moment they're still in an enclosure in order to get used to the area but they'll be set free soon. Addo will then be a Big 5 reserve too. The Mountain Zebra National Park is near Cradock which is about 250 Kms from PE via the N2 and then the N10. I've seen several reports that game viewing is quite good there as it is relatively speaking a small reserve and game is more concentrated and easier to find. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/cradock.asp and http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/mountainzebra.asp for a bit more information. Hope this helps - enjoy your visit! If you do visit the Garden Route Game Lodge at Albertinia a bit of feedback would be appreciated! Cheers. snip PS to my previous post: Double Drift game reserve in the Grahamstown area north of Port Elizabeth is also said to be worthwhile. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/doubledrift.asp for more. Also in the Addo area near Port Elizabeth is Kariega game reserve, see http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/kariega.asp for more info. Amakhala game reserve is also in that area but at this stage I don't have any information available. On that website you'll find more about other places in the Eastern Cape under Explore Eastern Cape in the menu. The Garden Route is under Explore Western Cape Garden Route in the menu. I notice you'll be going to Cape Town as well, there's a whole lot about Cape Town under Explore Western Cape Cape Town in the menu as well. Or see http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/capetown.asp for a summary and _link_s to Cape Town's many attractions. Besides Robben Island, try to fit in a visit to District Six and the District Six Museum. It's a stone's throw from central Cape Town and much of the area is still empty as result of apartheid's Group Areas Act. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/ct-museums.asp#5 for more about District Six Museum. And while I'm overloading you with info ) also go to Paarl or Stellenbosch or definitely Franschhoek in the Winelands, they're all fairly close to Cape Town and it's a lovely drive to Franschhoek via Stellenbosch or even Paarl. See Explore Western Cape Winelands in the menu of my website. You'll be here in November which is a good time for whale watching. See http://www.southafricaguides.co.za/whales.asp for more about what species you'll see here and where you'll find them. There are quite a few good sites along the Cape Peninsula shoreline. Cheers.
